Stress in the workplace

According to CIPD (2022), work-related stress is the negative reaction from people due to excessive demand and pressure at work. When employees believe that they lack the resources in terms of physical, financial, or emotional to handle these expectations at work.

Below listed elements can be identified as causes of work-related stress.

    • Workload
    • The leadership of the organization
    • Post-pandemic requirements (Work from Home/ online trading)
    • Medical conditions of the employee
    • Other personal issues
    • The current financial crisis in the country
    • Adopting new technology

Stress at the workplace directly affects employee performance and organizational performance as well. Therefore, HR managers should introduce policies to minimize the work floor stress of the employee.

Armstrong and Taylor (2014) identified that stress can be managed at an organizational level by following steps.

    •  Designing jobs within a defined structure to manage the workload.
    •  Setting targets and performance standards
    •  Planning careers and promoting staff
    •  Implementing a performance management system
    •  Giving counselling to staff when required
    •  Promoting anti-bullying campaigns
    •  Arranging training sessions

In the global context, when workplace stress is being recognized as a cause for concern on a global scale, all parties involved should pay closer attention to its significance and determine what needs to be done to improve the situation on the ground and make the workplace a safer and healthier place for all (Maulik, 2017).

Everyone can benefit from managing stress in the workplace. This will drive employee satisfaction and happy employees will perform better. In the global context, employees are considered the greatest assets and therefore it is necessary to have a happy and productive workforce to achieve organizational goals.
