‘Work-life balancing’ has become a widely discussed HR-related concern Globally. Equality between work life and personal life is critical to be a successful professional.

It is important to improve employees’ work-life balance and protect their health and well-being. This will bring benefits to the organization, by creating a more engaged workforce (CIPD, 2019).

According to Armstrong (2014) Work–life balance can be improved by implementing below mentioned ‘family-friendly’ policies that create a balance between working and personal commitments. Such as,

  • Part-time working,
  • Compressed working weeks,
  • Annualized hours,
  • Job-sharing,
  • Term-time only working.
  • Flextime (an arrangement for providing flexible hours in which employees are contracted to work for a weekly or monthly number of hours; within limits, they may vary their start or finish times as long as they work the hours required)

In the Sri Lankan context, employers may practice the below steps to have an engaged workforce with balanced work and personal life. Such as,

  •  Frequent employee training - this would be an efficient method to develop employees' capacity to manage many expectations of their job and multiple roles in their lives.
  •  Convincing communication.
  •  Proper delegation of work and the authority.
  •   Allowing employees to prioritize two accordingly (Weerasinghe and Dilhara).

Work-life support can create work life balance.

                                                                                                (Weerasinghe and Dilhara, 2018).

The current crisis in Sri Lanka may push employees to work hard to earn extra and this will trigger for unbalanced working life. Working till late and on weekends to earn Overtime incentives is one of the causes of an imbalance in work life. Unbearable workload, deadlines, the personality of the employee, salary scale, family problems, and education level can be identified as the main reasons for an unbalanced work life.

By conducting additional studies and educating the public about the value, it is vital to determine the importance of work-life balance in the Sri Lankan environment. Because work-life balance creates satisfied employees, and they will contribute to achieving organizational goals collectively.

  2. Due to the country's current economic status, it is a difficult topic in Sri Lanka, but while visiting Europe or other affluent nations, you will find that most individuals are able to maintain a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives.

Chris Chancey, career expert and CEO of Amplio Recruitment, noted that a healthy work-life balance has several advantages, including less stress, a lower chance of burnout, and a stronger sense of wellbeing. Employers and employees both gain from this.

  7. Employees are human being and they have a life outside the work. But because of the several reasons like heavy work load, high stress level, low support of peer group, managers request to work on day off, lack of skills may affect to the work-life balance. I think working women are mostly experience this than working men. After the COVID-19, some of the companies were practicing hybrid working. That will save employees time as well traveling cost.
